London´s Acoustic Angels
Tuesday 5th of February saw nine London based singer-songwriters perform for a spot on the European final to be held in Rome on Sunday the 17th. Rex’s bar was the right setting for this very intimate affair. A lucky winner also won a Fabulous Takamine guitar as the prize for the most popular player voted by a very enthusiastic audience. The Takamine/Ovation sponsored event at rex’s bar. A private member’s club, the venue was as beautiful as the music that was played. All was on display: sweet voices, passionate deliveries, quirky lyrics and some madness thrown in there for fun. At 8:30 AZADEH started her set with a gorgeous self penned tune that sent shivers down our spines. “A massage for the soul”, was a quote written to describe this beautiful singer. The voice of an Angel….. A stunning delivery. ANDREW HOWELL was up next and although he said he has not been performing long, you could not tell. Great vocals and a very spirited delivery. This Jeff Buckley inspired songwriter gave a terrific performance. Then it was time for MATTHEW EVANS. Matthew was more upbeat comparing to the previous two artists. His blend of pop tunes with fierce guitar strumming made this a very enjoyable listen. ALEX SHEPPERD was a young singer songwriter with quirky lyrics and a huge smile on her face. Her bubbly approach made this a truly enjoyable set. MACGOOZER was a familiar sight. This London based Glaswegian won best singer at the international band Festival Last year in Germany. Tonight, he was displaying his softer side with a few belters. An amazing singer with a voice to send the back of our stand! No joke! ALEXANDER WOLFE was the most reserved, introverted artist on the night. His shy approach made him the more interesting. He sang beautiful tunes with passion and radiance yet retaining that beautiful shy quality about him. Just brilliant. IAIN HORROCKS then walked on stage and with a big grin on his face announced that he was actually using his own Takamine guitar and proceded to impress the audience with a bunch of delightful melodies. This multi instrumentalist is one to watch in the future. This is first class songwriting. ALLAN ROSE was up next and the youngest lad of the night showed us that age and experience don’t count for much when you have the tunes inside your heart. Great job. To top it all off ANNE MARIE HELDER made it all worth the wait.
This fervent lady sang with more “balls” then most men I’ve seen. She was truly exceptional. Great delivery. The night was over by midnight and so the judges decided on the winner of the Takamine/Ovation sponsored event but first there was a beautiful Takamine guitar to give away and the public chose AZADEH. The girl was truly shocked and rightly so. The guitar is a wonderful piece of workmanship and plays like dream. Next up the announcement for the winning artist…….ALEXANDER WOLFE! Yes, this shy and wonderful artist is flying to Rome on Sunday the 17th of February for the big Takamine/Ovation Emergenza Acoustic Hero European final, where he will represent England and as all the artists said on the night…..”good luck mate, you have now a piece of us in you…..make us proud representing our country!”
